In partnership with the Košice-based CESCI Carpathia, our association actively takes part in the development of cross-border cooperation evolving along the eastern borders of the EU. In compliance with the objectives of the Eastern Partnership policy we provide our support for better crossability of borders, cooperation between the border communities and the development of the border areas. For this purpose, CESCI signed a cooperation agreement with the representatives of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and the National University of Uzhhorod.
Košice Platform
CESCI, CESCI Carpathia, the AEBR and the Research Centre of the Slovak Foreign Policy Association initiated the establishment of the Košice Platform. The objective of the initiative is to gather the Central European researchers and experts of Eastern Patrnership and to promote their cooperation with a view to enabling them to effectively contribute to the shaping of the relevant EU policies. The platform was established in 2019 in Košice (SK).
Strategic alliance set along the external borders of the EU
On 10 February, the National University of Uzhhorod (Ukraine) hosted a ceremonial event including a scientific meeting where the representatives of the three partners, the Institute of Economic and Legal Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Faculty of Law of Uzhhorod National University and the Central European Service for Cross-Border Initiatives (CESCI) signed a cooperation memorandum launching strategic alliance facilitating cross-border cooperation along Ukraine’s western borders.

A Ukrainian handbook on cross-border cooperation has been published
In February 2020, our association signed a cooperation agreement with the Institute of Economics and Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Faculty of Law of the National University of Uzhgorod. As part of the cooperation, a handbook entitled “Cross-border cooperation: legal bases and successful practices” has now been published, in which the Secretary General of our association also wrote a chapter.
EU integration of Ukraine across borders – with the help of the V4
Within the framework of the project 'EU integration of Ukraine across borders - with the help of the V4', funded by the International Visegrad Fund, the partners aimed to organise two events during the annual event of the Association of European Border Regions held in Košice between 8 and 11 November 2023.
CBC in Ukraine and V4: in the search for examples of best practice
The project aims to identify and promote institutional models and everyday practices that effectively support cross-border cooperation and can be applied in Ukraine’s EU accession process by five research institutes from the Visegrad Four (V4) countries and Ukraine. The research aims to map out working examples and obstacles to cooperation between the V4 countries and Ukraine, with a particular focus on regional development, the needs of local communities, interethnic dialogue and security aspects. Research based on a common methodology, focus group interviews, expert forecasts, statistical analyses, seminars and a final conference will help to substantiate the results.
