Costs of non-Interreg

| 18 November 2024

The future of European cohesion policy is surrounded by growing uncertainty. The Transfrontier Euro-Institut Network (TEIN) – of which the LUPS-CESCI Research Group of Cross-Border Cooperation is also a member – therefore wrote a study entitled “Costs of non-Interreg”, contributing to the ongoing discourse.

For more than 35 years, Interreg has been a key tool for promoting solidarity, reconciliation, trust-building and strategic cooperation, especially in cross-border regions. It played a key role in reducing the divisive effects of borders and boosting the local economy of border areas.

Today, however, we experience growing mistrust, dissatisfaction and disharmony between EU member states. TEIN members are united in the belief that now more than ever there is a need to strengthen the spirit of solidarity and cooperation. European territorial cooperation, especially through Interreg, remains the best tool for preserving the fundamental values and achievements of European integration.

In short, without Interreg it is difficult to imagine the EU remaining united in the face of today’s crises. The longer argument can be read here.
