Governance mechanisms for cross-border functional areas: CESCI in the CROSSGOV Project

CESCI is participating as a consortium partner in the ESPON project CROSSGOV, which runs from July 2024 to January 2026 and has a total budget of EUR 725,130. The project aims to examine cross-border functional areas emerging as a result of intensifying cross-border processes and integration, in order to contribute to better governance of cross-border areas by providing new analyses and formulating policy recommendations. The project covers most of Europe: a total of 10 border areas with diverse geographical, governance, functional and border regime characteristics from different parts of Europe, are examined through case studies and recommendations are formulated about them.

Task 3 is led by CESCI which works closely with the partners responsible for the development of the individual case studies and with the Friedrich-Alexander University in Germany, in particular in the formulation of policy recommendations. CESCI’s activities include:

  • the preparation of the case study of the Komárom-Komárno twin-city area,
  • the overall professional coordination of the other 9 case studies
  • the mapping and brief analysis of the border regions related to each case study
  • the preparation of a comprehensive analysis based on each case study.

In addition to this, in Task 2, in cooperation with the Polytechnic University of Turin CESCI is involved in the collection of indicators related to cross-border institutions.

In March, CESCI’s main tasks will mainly include interview and workshop preparation activities related to its own and partners’ work, as well as the development of mapping zoom-ins (short analyses of border areas for each case study), in addition to providing ongoing technical support to partner organisations.
