CESCI’s Yearbook

Our most significant scientific publication is our yearbook called Cross-Border Review, which has been published in English since 2014. Its editor-in-chief is James W. Scott, a world-renowned professor of Border Studies, who has successfully invited some of the most prominent European researchers in the field to be part of the editorial team. The Yearbook is primarily recommended for the scientific community, students studying geography and political science, and professionals interested in border studies.

James Wesley Scott is the Professor of Regional Studies and Border Studies at the Karelian Institute of the University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu. Prior to this, he was a research fellow at the Leibniz Institute for Regional Development and Structural Planning (Erkner, Germany) and an associate professor at the Freie Universität Berlin. He obtained his habilitation (2006), PhD (1990) and MA (1986) from the Freie Universitäten and his BSc from the University of California, Berkeley (1979). His research interests include urban and regional development policies, political geography, border studies, cross-border regionalism in Europe and North America, and the spatial effects of transformation processes in Central and Eastern Europe. He coordinated several projects supported by the European Union, including the EXLINEA and EUDIMENSIONS projects, which were implemented in the EU’s Fifth and Sixth Framework Programs, respectively.

The 'Cross-Border Review 2023' is CESCI's tenth yearbook, which is published this year in collaboration with the UPS-CESCI Research Group of Cross-Border Cooperation. The study volume analyses the importance of cross-border cooperation, emphasising knowledge exchange and social innovation. The authors also examine the sharp decisions made in the field of democracy, governance and personal freedom, highlighting the positive social benefits of cross-border cooperation.
